To Vegan or Not to Vegan by Debbie
To vegan or not to vegan?
What is the answer?
A highly charged question!
A very emotional topic!
A multitude of points of view!
A can of worms!
As someone on a spiritual path of awakening, one with enlightenment as the end goal would I make the choice to harm animals or not!
The path of enlightenment is two fold, on one side sits wisdom and on the other is compassion. There is no hope of achieving enlightenment without having compassion for ALL sentient beings.
A sentient being by definition is a being that possesses a mind! That is not only animals it includes insects, birds, reptiles and fish. Anything in fact with a central nervous system.
I have seen the argument on the one extreme, for plants, that plants have feelings. Plants are energetic and they respond to energy, without a doubt, they do not however possess a mind.
A valid argument however that goes against a plant based diet is that in the process of preparing, planting, growing and harvesting plants many many many insects and sentient beings are killed. Oh dear!
For some reason less significance is placed on this than is placed on animals. But think about this for a moment, all beings wish to be happy, all beings do not wish to suffer. Insects like ants, bees, cockroaches, live in highly evolved social units.
So, if we consume meat and dairy we are the direct cause of killing innocent beings.
If we consume a plant based diet we are the direct cause of killing innocent beings.
Therefore which do we choose?
The nature of life is suffering, it's unavoidable. For me, personally, the choice is to cause as little suffering to other sentient beings as possible. Yet, I know, that every time I get into my car to go anywhere I am killing millions of beings, walking on the earth itself, beings die.
In every moment we create the karma of killing.
Quite something to think about, isn't it?
And so, in the words of Thich Naht Hanh, walk gently on the earth as everything is connected.
